Call for proposals for an evaluation of the Berlin education program
As part of the project "Coordination Office for a Citywide Concept for Coming to Terms with Berlin's Colonial Past", Decolonize Berlin awards an interdisciplinary evaluation contract for the critical evaluation of Berlin's educational program in relation to anti-racist and intersectional pedagogical concepts.
The application is addressed to educational scientists and scientists from the field of psychology with a focus on early childhood development.
The two-year project (2020-2021) aims to develop measures together with representatives from politics, administration and civil society in order to initiate decolonization processes and to stimulate a broad social discussion about colonialism and the colonial aftermath. A particular focus is on anchoring the topic in education and science.
In 2020, ideas and strategies for action were developed at various events with civil society actors and representatives from administration and politics in order to strengthen the confrontation with colonialism and its continuities, especially racism, and to bring about sustainable changes. The goal is to fight institutional and structural racism and, above all, to guarantee the right to non-discriminatory education in the field of education.
Within the framework of the project, an evaluation of the Berlin educational program will be carried out with a focus on racist bias, especially in relation to anti-black racism. The background is that many children already experience racism in kindergarten and racist discrimination occurs both from other children and in the actions of educators. The goal of the Berlin Education Program is: "to provide a binding, scientifically based and professionally tested framework for the pedagogical work in the kindergarten. It describes what basic knowledge, skills and abilities children need in order to successfully follow their path through life, what content they should be introduced to, and how they can be supported according to their stage of development and their inclinations. The goal of the Berlin Education Program is to ensure that children acquire the best possible prerequisites for the transition to school and for their further educational and life paths.(berlin.de/familie/de/informationen/berliner-bildungsprogramm-14)
In order to make the results of the evaluation usable for the current project, a corresponding written work-up is required. The work will be published afterwards.
It is important to us that the analytical view is not limited to understanding "bias" as an a-historical, cognitive, individualized, psychological phenomenon, but is understood as embedded in structural social relations of power and discrimination.
Evaluation of the Berlin educational program in relation to racial bias, considering the following questions:
- To what extent does the Berlin educational program reflect anti-racist pedagogical approaches? At which points can anti-racist approaches be found?
- What role does the Berlin Education Program play in the everyday practice of daycare centers? Are there studies/evaluations on the implementation of the Berlin Education Program and the effectiveness of the pedagogical guideline in reducing racist experiences of children in day care centers?
- What are the recommendations for the Berlin Education Program? Where can anti-racist and intersectional pedagogical approaches be strengthened?
The exact modalities as well as the form of the documentation are to be clarified in a personal conversation. The estimated workload for the work performances amounts to a total of approx. 10 working days. The work should be completed by February 28, 2021, be written in German and have a length of approx. 25-40 pages. An outline of the approach must be submitted by 28.12.2020 after a detailed preliminary discussion.
We ask for an informal application (including CV without application photo) by 15.12.2020In this section it is briefly explained which research experiences or experiences in scientific work are given and whether or which previous knowledge in the subject area exists.
