(Digital) Opening of BARAZANI(dot)berlin – Forum Kolonialismus und Widerstand
Working group Museums and Collections of the network Decolonize Berlin e.V.
Dear media representatives, dear friends and fellow activists,
we invite you to the opening of the digital project BARAZANI.berlin – Forum Kolonialismus und Widerstand (Forum Colonialism and Resistance) at the Schlossplatz in Berlin.
In the East African lingua franca Kiswahili, “Baraza/ni” means place of assembly and meeting point, where a community discusses public affairs and decides about matters of law and justice.
The transnational cultural project is a continuation of the campaign “No Humboldt 21!” and a visionary follow-up project to the heavily criticized Humboldt Forum in the Berlin Schloss. It was initiated by the network Decolonize Berlin consisting of nine non-governmental organizations und 100 activists.
The deconstruction of the notorious Humboldt Forum has commenced. BARAZANI.berlin – Forum Kolonialismus und Widerstand reactivates an open space in the heart of the German capital for transnational exchange, for social protests and artistic creativity. From there, it creates access to the repressed and buried history and present of colonialism and imperialism, which are closely linked to Berlin’s symbolic center.
In cyberspace, the project highlights marginalized voices and disregarded perspectives of anti-colonial resistance and the decolonial movement worldwide. BARAZANI.berlin stands for a responsible approach to (post)colonial trauma. We join demands for a new ethic of relations between Europe and the Global South – for justice and respect, for symbolic and material reparation.
